Channel 4 have commissioned a second series and Christmas special of The Piano following its huge ratings success with its first series earlier this year, becoming Channel 4's highest-rating original format since 2017.

 

The Piano celebrates the nation’s favourite instrument by inviting talented amateur pianists to play on public pianos in London St Pancras, Leeds, Glasgow and Birmingham train stations, sharing their stories and music with the great British public.

 

The second series will once again be hosted by Claudia Winkleman with judges classical pianist Lang Lang and pop superstar Mika returning. The second series will see an increased episode count of seven episodes, plus the one-off festive special.

 

Channel 4's Chief Content Officer Ian Katz said:

"In a world full of wannabes seeking their moment in the limelight, The Piano was a breath of fresh air. It celebrated ordinary people doing something extraordinary for the sheer love of it. From 94-year-old widower George who played in Glasgow station to Lucy, the blind 13-year-old who stole the nation’s hearts."

 

The 1x60' Christmas special will see series one favourites return to perform carols and festive classics from London's King Cross station.

 

From nonagenarians who have been playing for eighty years to twelve-year-olds who have never played in pubic before, commuters in train stations across the country will be stopped in their tracks as heartfelt, emotional and uplifting performances take place.

Channel 4 has confirmed The Piano will return for two new series and a Christmas special.

The reality talent show, hosted by Strictly Come Dancing and The Traitors presenter Claudia Winkleman, debuted its first series over five weeks in February and March this year.

 

Audiences saw amateur pianists take to public pianos in London St Pancras, Leeds, Glasgow and Birmingham train stations to show off their skills.

 

Little did they know renowned classical pianist Lang Lang and popstar Mika were secretly watching and judging them, drawing up a list of four finalists who would perform at London's Royal Festival Hall.

 

Lucy, Jay, Sean and Danny made it to the season final and impressed with their piano performances, but it was 13-year-old Lucy's "jaw-dropping" rendition of Debussy's Arabesque No. 1 that saw the young musician crowned as The Piano's first winner.

 

Lucy played at King Charles' coronation concert in front of royalty, celebrities and millions of viewers. She will also feature in a standalone 70-minute documentary alongside her piano teacher Daniel.

 

Jay, Sean and Danny have also given a number of public performances, with the latter two set to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe in August.

 

The upcoming Christmas special will see some of series one's hopefuls returning to play Christmas favourites at Kings Cross railway station, and the newly-commissioned series have been expanded to seven episodes and will feature new "iconic locations" for pianists to play.

 

The Piano proved a huge success for Channel 4, becoming the network's best-rating new format since 2017. The series also had an average of 2.7 million viewers through its run.

 

As a result, the programme (commissioned from The Great British Bake Off's Love Productions) will be back for a second and third season, with the number of episodes increasing from five to seven.

Claudia Winkleman's Channel 4 series is reportedly coming back for another round.

 

Claudia Winkleman fronted show The Piano is reportedly heading back to Channel 4 after a successful first season.

 

The five-part series followed amateur musicians who feel brave enough to sit down at pianos in four of the country's busiest train stations. Whilst there, they're tricked into thinking they're being filmed for a documentary. 

 

What they didn't know, is that their performances were secretly judged by singing sensation Mika, and Chinese classical pianist Lang Lang, both of which have a lot of experience when it comes to the music industry. 

 

One lucky contestant from each station was given the chance to perform on one of London's most prestigious stages, in a truly life-changing opportunity that showcased the talent of 'ordinary' people. 

 

Now, given the success of the series which had the nation in tears, it's apparently coming back for a second installment where we'll see more talented pianists showing off their skills.

 

According to The Sun, Chief Creative Officer at Channel 4, Ian Katz, said: "In a world full of wannabes seeking their moment in the limelight, The Piano was a breath of fresh air.

 

"It celebrated ordinary people doing something extraordinary for the sheer love of it. From 94-year-old widower George who played in Glasgow station to Lucy, the blind 13-year-old who stole the nation’s hearts."

 

The publication reports that The Piano will return for season 2 next year, as well as a festive special this December, so fans of the heartwarming series should have plenty to look forward to.

 

Right now, we don't have specific details about what season 2 of The Piano might entail. Considering the nation now knows about the series, it might be a little trickier to go ahead with the original concept and pretend it's a documentary!

 

So we can only assume that season 2 of The Piano will look different, but we will have to watch patiently to find out what's in store.

Meanwhile, Claudia Winkleman will be back in The Traitors season 2 after the first instalment had audiences hooked. There was a record number of applicants the second time around too, so it will be interesting to see who joins the show next.

The heart-warming series that captured the nation, The Piano, is set to return for a further two series.  Claudia Winkleman will once again play host as she’s joined by Lang Lang, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest classical pianists of the modern era and Mika, universally recognised as one of the world’s great performers. 

 

Commissioned from Love Productions, the new series of The Piano,  expanded from five episodes to seven, will create incredible opportunities for undiscovered pianists to showcase their talent on public pianos across the UK, including some new iconic locations.

 

In the spectacular finale of series one, viewers saw, 13-year old pianist Lucy win performance of the night with her awe-inspiring rendition of Debussy Arabesque at the Royal Festival Hall in front of more than 2,000 spectators. Since then, having won the hearts of the nation, Lucy has played at the coronation concert in front of royal guests.

 

Fellow finalists, Sean, Danny and Jay have also performed at the Alistair McGowan Piano Festival; Sean and Jay are writing music together, and Sean and Danny are performing at the Edinburgh Fringe in August.

 

The Piano was Channel 4’s  best-rating new format since 2017 (Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds).  The first episode  consolidated to 2.7m and the series average was the same [2.7m]   Viewers across the country heralded the uniqueness of the series and said it offered up a completely fresh perspective on music talent shows.

 

Additionally, Love Productions will be producing a  1 x 60 Christmas special which will see some of our favourite pianists from series one return to play festive numbers in front of commuters in London’s King’s Cross Station. Claudia will be on hand throughout to sprinkle some secret Santa moments and celebrity surprises on the occasion. Whilst Mika and Lang Lang will, as ever, be watching proceedings before stepping in to deliver a few festive gifts of their own.

 

Also, Lucy’s outstanding talent will be explored further in a one-off documentary which will follow Lucy and her piano teacher, Daniel. The 1x70 commission will delve further into Lucy’s connection to the world around her and how she communicates through music.

Encore for Piano

 

The Piano is returning for a second run on Channel 4 but mystery surrounds how they will keep up the show’s surprise element.

 

In the first series, judges Mika and Lang Lang secretly watched players performing in train stations, before picking a line-up of the best musicians for a concert.

 

But host Claudia Winkleman, inset, was adamant it would be a one-off. Asked in February if it could continue beyond a single series, she said: “It can’t. The minute you put a piano anywhere, somebody will go, ‘Oi, where’s Mika?’

Things are allowed to happen once and just be a lovely piece of telly, a lovely one-off.”

 

But that was before the show was C4’s best-rating new format since 2017. So another series has been ordered and C4 admit to us they are unsure how the format will work so players don’t suspect they’re being watched in public spaces. For now, creator Richard McKerrow, of Love Productions, says: “We’re extremely excited to be embarking on further series with the opportunity to unearth a whole new range of unknown amateur pianists.” Watch this space...

CHANNEL 4 BRINGS BACK THE PIANO FOR TRIPLE ENCORE

 

When The Piano launched in February, it became Channel 4's best-reted new format since Old People's Home For 4 Years Olds in 2017. So the commision of a second series comes as no surprise.

 

But C4 has not stopped there, ordering two further series of the Love Productions show, each with seven episodes, Claudia Wincleman and judges Mika and Lang Lang will return to discover unknown amateur pianists as they showcase their talent on public pianos across the UK.

Channel 4’s piano talent show, judged by superstar pianist Lang Lang and pop singer Mika, has been renewed for two more series and a Christmas special.

 

The Piano is a TV talent competition on Channel 4, all about the joys of playing the 88 keys.

 

The contest, which was ‘won’ in March 2023 by the young blind virtuoso, Lucy Illingworth, looks for the UK’s top amateur pianists, in four of the best-known modern settings for the instrument – London St Pancras, Birmingham New Street, Leeds and Glasgow Central train stations.

As the amateur piano players share their stories and music with the public, their playing is secretly adjudicated by pop star Mika, and superstar Chinese virtuoso, Lang Lang. And it all culminates in a grand concert finale at the Royal Festival Hall.

Channel 4 has now confirmed that The Piano will return for two new series and a Christmas special. It was a huge success for the TV network, becoming its best-rating new format since 2017 and boasting an average of 2.7 million viewers.

How can I watch The Piano?

Who are the judges for The Piano?

The two judges in The Piano are superstar pianist Lang Lang and pop singer Mika, who secretly adjudicate the pianists’ playing at the train station pianos.

Lang Lang told The Guardian of his delight at being involved in a high-profile TV programme centred around the piano. “TV has never really had a piano competition accessible to everyone,” he said.

“We’ve had professional contests or series for vocalists but never just piano. This instrument really is for everybody. Piano connects people, it touches hearts. This is the sort of show I’ve always wanted to do.”

Mika, previously a judge on the Italian X Factor and the French version of The Voice, told The Guardian that amateur pianists would bring “honesty” to the talent show. “They wear their heart on their sleeve in a way professionals just aren’t able to do,” the singer added.

For Lang Lang, playing in train stations rather than concert halls makes it “much more casual and spontaneous”, and brings an element of surprise among the audience. Be they a busy commuter, a stressed parent or a crying child, they all have the capacity to be immediately calmed or delighted by the sound of a piano.

The pianist also hopes it might inspire people to take up the instrument. “I’m pretty sure more people will be interested in playing piano after this show,” says Lang Lang. “It shows the sheer joy of music, no matter who you are.”

Who is the host of The Piano?

The Piano, which comes from the makers of The Great British Bake Off, will be hosted by TV presenter Claudia Winkleman (The Traitors).

Who are the contestants in The Piano?

The Piano showcases pianistic talent from across the generations, with the ages of contestants spanning from six to 95.

As they play music across the worlds of classical, jazz, hip-hop and house, the contestants will be judged on their technical ability, as well as their charisma and passion.

In March 2023, the four finalists were 13-year-old Lucy from West Yorkshire, who was crowned as delivering the ‘winning’ performance of series one, 25-year-old Jay from the Isle of Wight, 27-year-old Sean from Edinburgh and 26-year-old Danny from Manchester.

When is season 2 of The Piano out?

Shortly after its hugely successful first season, The Piano was confirmed for a second and third season, as well as a Christmas special.

Claudia Winkleman is set to return for season two, alongside judges Lang Lang and Mika. A specific date hasn’t been announced for the series, but it’s anticipated to arrive in 2024 and consist of seven episodes.

Applications to appear on the show are open until 31 October, with competition expected to be particularly high following the success of blind 13-year-old Lucy in season one.

The Christmas special has already been filmed in London’s King’s Cross railway station, and the second series was recently spotted filming in Manchester Piccadilly train station, for an episode that will show on Channel 4 in the New Year.

Surprise hit The Piano is back for a festive special, featuring some of the amateur pianists from the f irst series. Hosted by Claudia Winkleman, the Channel 4 show followed members of the public playing pianos at train stations, while being secretly observed by celebrated classical pianist Lang Lang and pop star Mika.

 

The one-off special, complete with seasonal numbers and Christmas hats, was filmed at London’s King’s Cross station in October. Did the crew get any funny looks from commuters?

 

“The wonderful thing we’ve found is that placing your ‘set’ in a train station is the perfect live musical environment,” says the show’s creator Richard McKerrow. “To come across beautiful music spontaneously, when you’re least expecting it is great.”

McKerrow, also the man behind The Great British Bake Off, is delighted that The Piano “touched a chord” with viewers: “I like doing shows that people don’t expect to work. For five years everyone turned down Bake Off!”

 

After the Christmas special, there will be a documentary on Lucy Illingworth, the blind and autistic teenager who won the first series and went on to perform at the Coronation Concert, with a second series of The Piano due next year. But how will the secret element work, now that we all know about Mika and Lang Lang hiding in the wings?

 

“That’s been a big question,” says McKerrow, hinting that the show may look slightly different when it returns. “But what we learnt from series one was that people weren’t doing it to be on a talent show. And what viewers loved about it was the pianists and the music. I think the surprise was a bit of a telly conceit. We don’t think it needs it but I may be completely wrong – it will be up to the audience to decide whether they keep watching.”

 

Like Bake Off, The Piano is heartwarming TV. “I believe in using television as a force for good,” says McKerrow. “At its best it brings people together. Especially at a time when everything isn’t great, let’s celebrate the good things within people.”

Aww, this is adorable!   Lol really Mika, his eyes might look a bit tired, but he definitely does NOT look like 74. He might look like 35 instead of 25 like he usually does, so maybe that's what makes him feel old.

Claudia spotted in Cardiff as The Piano contestants serenade passengers

 

COMMUTERS travelling through Cardiff Central railway station on Monday were in for a surprise as filming crews took over the area.

A grand piano was placed in the centre of the station, which could only mean one thing - Channel 4’s The Piano had come to the capital.

The series, which originally aired earlier this year, was a massive success and no sooner than it had finished the broadcaster recommissioned it for two further editions. Host Claudia Winkleman was present at filming and spent time taking selfies with fans.

Also present were three pianists who are set to feature on the new series which is set to hit screens next year.

Production took over the train station on

Monday and yesterday.

While filming was taking place onlookers stopped by to watch the performances and catch a glimpse of the Strictly Come Dancing host.

The premise of The Piano sees gifted amateur pianists offered the chance to play live at some of the nation’s busiest railway stations.

As this is happening the musicians are judged by renowned virtuoso pianist Lang Lang and platinum-selling pop musician Mika.

The judges’ chosen contestants are then invited to perform to a concert audience of thousands in the show’s grand finale.

The Piano is one of two popular shows in the last year for Claudia who also hosts BBC’s The Traitors, which is set to return in early 2024.

I will have to record it too, but I am sure they will repeat it

  It's likely it will be on Channel 4's catch up service online just like with series 1 of The Piano. Most programs stay for a minimum of 28 days, as before international fans will need a vpn to access it.
