Hapy Ending video on YouTube

When I first saw the video yesterday I was quite excited. I have watched it a few times now (both with and without the music) and to be honest - now I must say that the Grace Kelly video is still my favourite. But HE is not a bad one either, a good runner up. I still like the atmosphere. Can't explain the difference (I mean, why do I like GK better than HE) - it's just a feeling.

Oh well, back to work. Interesting discussion anyway. :wink2:

Okay, I've just watched it again a few times since my negative first reaction/impression last night.

It is growing on me, but I still can't say I really love it. And it is hard to put my finger on why exactly, but when I think of the Grace Kelly video next to this, it just seems like a different Mika, and I think I miss the 'old' Mika a bit - even though I know he has many sides to his personality.

However, the video is clever, offbeat in its own way, certainly will stand out from other stuff we are seeing on the video channels, and Mika looks great in it although that really goes without saying, and despite some of the cheesy posing (I blame the director for that) his star quality still shines through and lights up the screen.

In fact my favourite bit of the whole video is the hands forming the star at the end...another subliminal message (after LT vid) for those people out there who still haven't cottoned on to the undeniable fact that that's what Mika is.

I am struggling hard not to say " I love it because it reminds me on Labyrinth/the muppet show/peter pan/whatever..." In the end, I think I just love it because it's Mika and he kind of sums up all these imaginary worlds into his own universe...

If anything, I'm happy he came out with this little bit strange and unpredictable video. No matter if ppl think it's cheesy... It's just nothing like what was expected for this song, and as far as I'm concerned, that's what I expected ! :thumb_yello:

okay long post coming up....

I can see what people mean about the difference in "MIKA" in the videos...

if you look at Grace Kelly, the first thing that struck me about MIKA was NOT his voice, NOT the song, NOT his clothes, NOT his hair, but his CONFIDENCE. To watch a starter in the pop industry bouncing around like he did in Grace Kelly is not often, I think. He was completely doing his own thing, doing whatever he felt comfortable with and not giving a damn. To me, this is why Grace Kelly will always be a classic, because I feel this is the video where he truly was himself, because even though it was directed, it sort of wasn't at the same time. He was just doing whatever.

Unlike with Happy Ending. Everything was choreographed. Mika you MUST be in bed. you MUST look at the camera. Mika you HAVE to turn this way at this point...I think that's why it sort of lost emotion.

Not only that, I think no-one was really expecting the video to turn out like it did. Likewise with Love Today, people liked it and people hated it. Love Today didn't turn out like I thought, almost threw me off guard sorta way, and I think it applies here, too.

I can see why people see it's cheesy. Flying in the hair, the hands, the hands clapping towards the end...

But this is my detailed interpretation of the video (some parts inspired by other posts)

The piano starts to play by itself which gives a haunting sort of feel, like Carmel (ThatRadFreak) said. Is it because he's haunted by his love life?

The bed is self explanatory.

The animals and the cartoons however, I believe are the images inside his head. When I was heartbroken I DID talk to my friends about it, but it was on my mind 24/7 and couldnt discuss it all the time with them. Even though they're friends and they're there to comfort you, I knew they'd eventually get bored so I stuck to talking it through in my head. I think this is what the talking toys signify - going through it inside your head, wondering what went wrong. But like Mika says also, he doesn't want his music to be "escapism" as such, but hyped up reality. As if you guys have never looked at your toys before and tried to imagine them being real (especially after watching Toy Story).

It was once a dark room but then daylight crawls in. Mika sings the verse and then it goes dark again, signifying that a whole day has gone by and he has done nothing but lay in bed, because he's not up to anything else.

The balloon then ties around his wrist and lifts him out of bed. At every down point in your life you have to lift yourself up, whether you done it yourself or your friends/family helped you. I think this is what the balloon signifies. Some people are annoyed with the untied shoelaces but I think this could represent that at some point in life, you are bound to trip, fall and hurt yourself. Mika looks down - whether it's at his shoelaces or because he's rising up - but I see this is as some kind of outer body experience rather than a dream. It's almost like he's looking down on his life. We then see the toys singing...I believe the toys are bringing across what's inside his head but can't quite say it out loud.

The night-time quite obviously represents that he's in a dark moment in life. However, the moon shines brightly throughout the video and it's quite big too...I know there's a moon every night (pretty much) but I think the brightness could show that there's always hope, even in the darkest of times (come on, tell me when you've seen a moon so bright before) and like I've said before, a small light shining in a dark room always suited well with the "little bit of love", IMO.

The white balloons floating up could signify his innocence - maybe he wasn't the one to fault the relationship. Or they could signify hope - in the hope that he will one day get on with his life and pull through stronger.

We also see yellow balloons, but these quite confused me. The colour yellow signifies happiness/energy...which in this case, does not fit with the song. But I think they MAY represent that you can always find happiness at the end of it all, that good always comes out from something bad, but if this IS the case it should be showcased at the END of the video, rather than the middle.

The fact that he's alone in Space shows that he feels "alienated" (pun was not intended). When heartbroken, it really does feel like everyone around you is just happy and getting on with their life in fast motion, yet you're just sitting around moping, not getting over it, watching the days fly past you. Space is such a vast and empty...well, space, and it could represent the emotion Mika is feeling....just a hollow emptiness.

Thinking he can start his life again, the balloon is freed from Mika's wrist and he begins to fall slowly. This could show that Mika is having trouble balancing on his own two feet on his own, and this is where the hands come in. The hands help him balance and guide him in the right direction.

There are now plenty of white hands holding identical purple balloons, like the one Mika was holding. Like Carmel said, I believe this also represents the fact that you are NEVER alone - someone is always going through exactly the same thing as you and I think it's a sort of comfort, in a way.

I do believe also that the hands could signify his friends, or the people close to him. They form faces and start singing "little bit of love" to him. I didn't find the hands creepy at all...I thought the message of it was quite sweet: no matter how alone or alienated you feel, there's always someone there showing you support, giving you hope, always showing a little bit of love. I think this is why Mika smiles.

I think the "E.T" vs "Michaelangelo painting" was not intended. I saw it as a sort of goodbye. If you look, the hand flies away. I think this means that it's time for Mika to start walking by himself again. The hands are still there at the end of it all, but they're not supporting him anymore. They're just there, right behind him, like friends should be.

I can see why people think it's cheesy on first impressions, but if you look at the video closely enough there's a deep meaning behind it.

Wow Cazgirl- what an indepth analysis!!!

I love the video- it was really different to anything he's done and as much as it is highly choreographed I think it will appeal to a wide audience!

please - call me caz, or caroline :)

i hope you liked the analysis....took me ages LOL!

i personally like the video. If people opened their eyes to see the in depth meaning behind him (and I know a lot of people who won't like Mika will see this video with a narrow mind) they'll find that the video will probably appeal to them more than they realise.

great explanation caz... :)

i guessed the video had a lot of meaning behind it :) i think people might have been expecting something a little more dramatic ... like mika acting out a heartbroken/romantic scene or something ... i love how hes done it though , its fabby :thumb_yello:

Not really.

I am not one of those who hate the video, but it's not like the "cheesyness" somehow disappears or is suddenly okay just because there's "meaning." As someone else said, there are plenty of videos out there that have meaning without any cheesyness.

Telling people who don't like the video for its cheesy/chiche/whatever qualities that they're just not seeing the meaning is a bit like telling someone, "ok, so those shoes may pinch your toes and twist your ankles, but they're really well sewn!" :bleh: The fact that they have very careful stitching is not going to help the fact that they just don't fit and are a pain to wear.

Video = Awesome

Remix of Song = Not getting it at all.

Im sorry, that's just my opinion. For me, the remix is far too commercialized, and doesn't capture the beauty of the original, piano based album mix.

Now, it's really drum based and the piano and beautiful vocals all get lost somewhere....

But, that's just what i think. Maybe they've done right and it will appeal to a much larger audience then the original. Time will tell....

LMAO that well made me laugh xDD

i didnt mean to say that just because there's a deep meaning the cheesiness all goes...the cheesiness is still there but for me personally, it's not as cheesy as it once was. other people think differently, obviously.
