After several shows and a new gig soon in Normandy, what do you remember particularly from your visits?

 

What is astounding when I think about France and when I think about all these tours is that I can really see progress. It started 5 or 5 years and a half ago with a very small show in the Bataclan in Paris with 400 people, then there was a big show at L'Olympia and then we progressed we did Zenith, Parc des Princes, Cirque d'Hiver. When I think about my gigs in France, I can see a real progression in my career, more than anywhere else. I can really see evolution in my shows and also how I adapted myself to make a show that represents my universe. I really learnt my job during my tours in France, because I tour a lot in the regions, which really gave me the opportunity to develop something in a country.

 

For each new tour, do you think about a new staging?

 

Absolutely, there's always a new concept. A concept that I don't necessarily have to explain because first of all it's a gig, it's not a play or an opera, but there must be a concept that me and my team have in mind. For example we use the festivals and the small Summer tour to develop visuals and ideas for new tours and also for album visuals. I develop everything along the way, because I never really had time to isolate myself a few weeks in a rehearsal studio and then present it to the audience. For me, we start with ingredients, new costumes, symbols that we will develop during tours and festivals. I think that's why a lot of people come back to see my shows, to see how it evolved. We develop all our ideas while touring.

 

In September your 3rd album will be released, is there an evolution compared to the 2 previous ones which were about childhood and adolescence mostly?

 

There's a lot of evolution on this album that is being finished now. If I think about my favourite songs on the album, I think about a song called 'The Origin of Love', with which all has begun, or 'Underwater' and 'Lola'. In these 3 songs, which are all love songs, we can hear different versions of love and different influences, like the Bee Gees, a kind of Californian sound with a smile on the face and it's quite sunny. These are soft love songs in English and there are a few in French.

 

Do you then think that one day you could write a whole album in French?

 

I would like to but I still need time. As I was saying, I develop my shows all along my tours, and I develop the same way this part of my career in French. There already are 3 or 4 French songs on this album, maybe after that, one day, I will make a whole album in French.

 

Would you like to have a duet with a French artist?

 

A few years ago I performed with the singer Emilie Simon on the show Taratata. It was really the first time I was singing in French with someone else. I like the idea of making a duet with someone who would not only be a singer, but someone who would make the lyrics live. Like France Gall's duets in the 60s, which for me is a nice period, with different kinds of voices. It was not only 2 people singing, there was a feeling. As if a singer was reciting the lyrics and I was singing, and so I would like to have a duet with an actress for example, not necessarily with a singer.

 

Would you like to change your universe and try to work as an actor for example?

 

I'm too clumsy for cinema. We can't see on stage how clumsy I am but in cinema everything is so close, there's a proximity that shows all details, I think it wouldn't be good.

 

Do your Lebanese American origins inspire or influence your work?

 

I was born in Beirut but then I lived in Paris and London and I have an American side too from my father so I have the feeling to be a little bit from nowhere, but at the same time from everywhere. So in my work I'm constantly searching, I try to give myself an identity. When I look at my siblings, I realise very quickly that we are all in the arts. So I think we all feel like coming from nowhere and in our jobs we can each create our universe. It gives us the impression to become what we dream or create.

Interview.Le chanteur pop britannique Mika donnera ce soir à 20 h un concert au parc Eana de Gruchet-le-Valasse.

 

Après plusieurs venues et un nouveau concert prochainement en Normandie, quels souvenirs particuliers gardez-vous de vos passages en France ?

 

Ce qui est étonnant quand je pense à la France et quand je pense à toutes ces tournées, je peux vraiment voir toute une progression. Ça a commencé il y a cinq ans, cinq ans et demi avec un tout petit show au Bataclan à Paris devant 400 personnes, après il y a eu un grand show à l’Olympia et ensuite on a avancé on a fait le Zénith, le Parc des Princes, le Cirque du Soleil. Quand je pense à mes concerts en France, je peux voir toute une progression de ma carrière, plus que n’importe où. Je peux vraiment voir toute une évolution de mes shows et aussi comment je me suis adapté pour faire un show qui représente mon univers. J’ai vraiment appris mon métier dans mes tournées en France, parce que je tourne beaucoup dans les régions, ce qui m’a vraiment donné la chance de développer quelque chose dans un pays.

 

 

Pour chaque nouvelle tournée, pensez-vous à une nouvelle mise en scène ?

 

Absolument, il y a toujours un concept. Un concept que nécessairement je ne dois pas expliquer parce qu’à la base c’est un concert, ce n’est pas une pièce de théâtre ou un opéra, mais il doit y avoir un concept que moi et toute mon équipe avons en tête. Par exemple on utilise ces festivals et la petite tournée de cet été pour développer les visuels et d es idées pour les prochaines tournées mais aussi pour les visuels de l’album. Moi je développe tout en route, parce que je n’ai jamais vraiment eu le temps de m’isoler quelques semaines dans un studio de répétitions et me dire que l’on va rester là quelques semaines pour développer tout un show et ensuite le présenter au public. Pour moi, on commence avec des ingrédients, des nouveaux costumes, des symboles que l’on va développer sur des tournées et dans des festivals. Je pense que c’est pour cela que beaucoup de personnes reviennent à mes shows, pour voir comment ça a évolué. On développe toutes nos idées sur la tournée.

 

 

En septembre sortira votre troisième album, y a-t-il des évolutions par rapport aux deux précédents qui traitaient principalement de l’enfance et de l’adolescence ?

 

Il y a pas mal d’évolutions sur l’album qui est entrain d’être fini maintenant. Si je pense à mes titres préférés sur cet album, je pense à une chanson qui s’appelle « L’origine de l’amour », avec laquelle tout a commencé, ou « Under water » et « Lola ». Dans ces trois chansons, qui sont toutes des chansons d’amour, on peut entendre différentes versions de l’amour et différentes influences, comme les Bee Gees, un son un peu californien avec une sorte de sourire sur le visage et c’est assez ensoleillé. Ce sont de douces chansons d’amour en anglais et en plus il y en a quelques unes en français.

 

 

Pensez-vous alors un jour écrire un album uniquement en français ?

 

J’aimerais bien mais j’ai encore besoin de temps. Comme je disais, je développe mes shows au fur et à mesure de mes tournées, et je développe de la même manière cette partie de ma carrière en français. Il y a déjà trois ou quatre chansons en français sur cet album, peut-être qu’après ça, un jour, je ferai tout un album en français.

 

 

Aimeriez-vous en attendant cet album, réaliser un duo avec un artiste français ?

 

Il y a quelques années j’ai fait une performance avec la chanteuse Emilie Simon dans l’émission Taratata. C’était vraiment la première fois que je chantais en français avec quelqu’un d’autre. J’aime bien l’idée de faire un duo avec quelqu’un qui ne serait pas uniquement une chanteuse, mais quelqu’un qui ferait vivre les paroles. Comme les duos avec France Gall dans les années 60, qui pour moi est une très belle période, avec différentes sortes de voix. Ce n’était pas uniquement deux personnes qui chantaient, il y avait un feeling. Comme si une chanteuse récitait les paroles et moi je chantais, et donc j’aimerais bien faire un duo avec une actrice par exemple, pas nécessairement une chanteuse.

 

 

Aimeriez-vous à votre tour changer d’univers artistique et vous essayer en tant qu’acteur par exemple ?

 

Je suis trop maladroit pour le cinéma. On ne peut pas réaliser sur scène comme je suis maladroit mais au cinéma tout est tellement proche, il y a une proximité qui montre tous les détails, je pense que je ne serai pas bon.

 

 

 

Vos origines, libano-americaine, inspirent-elles et influencent-elles votre travail ?

 

Je suis né à Beyrouth mais ensuite j’ai habité à Paris, à Londres et j’ai un côté américain aussi grâce à mon père donc j’ai un sentiment d’être un peu de nulle part, mais en même temps un peu de partout. Donc dans me travail je cherche constamment, j’essaie de me donner une identité. Quand je regarde tous mes frères et mes sœurs, je réalise très vite qu’on est tous dans l’art. Donc je pense que l’on se sent comme venir de nulle part et dans notre profession on peut chacun créer notre univers. Ca nous donne l’impression de venir de ce que l’on rêve ou crée.
