WE ARE GOLDEN - Lyrics Discussion

I think of it more like wild high school/college kids. Maybe because I am one, but you know "running around like clowns on purpose," "young and wanting some," not "giving a damn" about anything, trying to find happiness and love but maybe being a little too crazy! and then when people look at you like, "wow look at that crazy idiot dancing around," it's like.... shut up. We're Golden.

Golden as in indestructable?

That's was lots of adults tell us around here:

"You think you're invincable now, but just wait until you grow up blah blah blah"

Here's what I hear. Mind you, it's 5am and I haven't slept. Thanks, Mika. :teehee:

----------------------------

Teenage dreams in a teenage circus

Running around like a clown on purpose

Who gives a damn about the family you come from?

No giving up when you’re young and you want some

Running around again

Running from running

Waking up

In the midday sun

What’s to live for?

When you can see what I’ve done

Staring at emotion

In the light of day

I was hiding?

From the things that you’d say

We are not what you think we are

We are golden, we are golden.

We are not what you think we are

We are golden, we are golden.

Teenage dreams in a teenage circus

Running around like a clown on purpose

Who gives a damn about the family you come from?

No giving up when you’re young and you want some

Running around again

Running from running

Running around again

Running from running

I was a boy

At an open door

Why you staring

Do you still think that you know?

Looking for treasure

In the things that you threw

Like a magpie

I live for glitter, not you

We are not what you think we are

We are golden, we are golden.

We are not what you think we are

We are golden, we are golden.

Teenage dreams in a teenage circus

Running around like a clown on purpose

Who gives a damn about the family you come from?

No giving up when you’re young and you want some

Now I’m sitting alone

I’m really (already?)looking for help

Left here on my own

I’m gonna hurt myself

Maybe losing my mind

I’m still wondering why

I had to let the world let it bleed me dry

We are not what you think we are

We are not what you think we are

We are not what you think we are

We are golden, we are golden

Teenage dreams in a teenage circus

Running around like a clown on purpose

Who gives a damn about the family you come from?

No giving up when you’re young and you want some

Running around again

Running from running

Running around again

Running from running

We are not what you think we are

We are golden, we are golden.

It's hard for some of us Brits as well :blush-anim-cl:

Is it really?

Most of the time it's easier to understand Mika than his interviewer, they are talking so fast, especially Jo Whiley.:roftl: Mika's voice is relatively clear, you can actually hear that he has been taking singing lessons, and he doesn't mumble so much!

You can hear all the syllables:wink2:

His speaking voice is fine - but when he sings - particulary with the dense production - I can't hear the words clearly - without seeing it written down, I would never have guessed at half of them :roftl:

Happy to hear I was not the only one who had a hard time to hear the lyrics!:naughty:

I really hope he will sing WAG on his shows, imagine only his voice, not the whole choir!:wub2:

I think I've decided that I like it.

Now that theres a general idea on the lyrics, most of which I agree with, I can begin to pick the song apart and interpret it. but not yet, I want to let it washover me a few more times, simply absorb the entirity of it.

Just by listening to the music you can hear the adolescense Mika was talking about, and you can definitely see it in the lyrics.

I'll be back with more of my opinion after I listen a bit more :biggrin2:

I loved that line until I really began to think about it, as I'm doing with the whole song, and though I still love it Ii think that's one of the least good/happy lines in the song :naughty:

Or at least in the way I look at it.

I really haven't decided how happy or sad this song is yet :original:

When Perez posted the song on his site, he said, "The best way to describe We Are Golden is epic. Huge. Massive. And, of course, happy!". Umm...well, I guess it sounds happy.

But pay attention to the lyrics...

I don't think you're totally wrong, but I'd take it a step further --

not just a stick-you to the parents, but possibly to lots of others around

him. Coming from a very small town with lots of small-minded people

myself, I totally relate to this! :thumb_yello:

I feel kinda connected to the song, because I live in this small town where if I shout out my dream I'd probably be laughed at or probably some one else trying to steal my dream run away with it and trying hard to beat me to it. Once again Mika's songs are there to help me get though the (atrocious) high-school.

I love the idea of "Living for glitter, not you" because as much as it sounds so damn selfish, I live for my dream: to be this famous filmmaker and make it big in the movie bussiness behind the cameras. I'll fight for it with all my strenght until I get it. (For the time being I am pretty stuck in the Mika world and can't get myself any inspiration to write anything, damn it!) For me there is no: "That's impossible! You won't make it! You're too small." I learned to trust myself thanks to Mika and get used to the idea that being different is good. Being different makes me happy, makes me special, makees me better than the rest, makes me GOLDEN!

I also love the bridge of the song! It's wonderful!!! So empowering!:wub2:

I think it's a wonderful song that young people will relate to. They want to get out there and do their own thing but adults may want to stop them. Plus any problems always seem huge when you are young. I know that I was a big worrier about everything when I was in my teens, and this song reminds me of that time when I was so unsure about everything.

I think it's a great line- (the glitter one) very revealing and a very harsh thing to say to someone. I take the "you" as being someone glamourous who sort of fascinates him, though it could also be taken to mean, "I'm not interested in you, you're boring"

I'm going to read this whole thread over the next couple of days, but my first impression, despite the WE are golden, is that it's about rejection by your peer group (or parts of it) rather than parents and townsfolk.

I found these lyrics on internet tonight!

:naughty: Yeah, someone else found them from us, earlier

in this thread! Mana had most of them up with a few hours

after the song debuted. :wink2:

I have to say though, the more I listen, the more

I almost hear "Making love" or "Making out" instead

of "Waking up" in the first verse...

I have to stop listening! It'll drive me crazy! :insane:

It's definitely "waking up" :naughty:

Maybe you should stop listening to it for a little :insane:
