Quatre ans qu’il n’avait pas sorti de disque... Mika revient, avec un nouvel album intitulé My name is Michael Holbrook, qui sortira le 5 octobre prochain. Juste avant sa tournée mondiale, il répond à Gentside pour casser quelques clichés masculins qui nous pourrissent la vie...

 

Musique colorée, mélodies joyeuses, chansons électro, sonorités des années 80-90, cet album est un véritable retour aux sources pour le chanteur pop, douze après son Life in Cartoon Motion et ses 5,5 millions d’exemplaires vendus.

 

Un album très intime

 

Composé entre Miami, la Toscane et Londres, cet opus est un projet beaucoup plus intime, a confié le chanteur sur l’antenne de Chérie FM.

 

Quelques-uns des treize titres ont déjà été révélés au public, comme Ice Cream, Tiny Love, Sanremo, Dear Jealousy ou encore Tomorrow. Dans cette dernière, il nous invite à vivre au jour le jour, sans se soucier de quoi sera fait le lendemain.

 

Des morceaux dans lesquels Mika parle de sa vie, de sa famille, des non-dits… Avec beaucoup de joie et de larmes… Il n’a pas peur d’exprimer ses sentiments, il estime même que les hommes “montrent leurs sentiments en public, beaucoup plus, à mon avis, que les femmes”, cassant ainsi un vieux cliché qui a la vie dure.

 

Un mec “ça a beaucoup de complexes”

 

"Un mec ça ne pleure pas," "un mec ça a la voix grave," "un mec ça n’a pas de complexe"... Des stéréotypes qui ne définissent pas du tout la vedette pop.

"Le matin j’ai la voix grave, avec la journée et les heures qui passent, elle monte… Et ça tombe bien parce que la plupart de mes concerts, où je chante haut, sont le soir," rit le chanteur.

Madame Figaro. - Quel a été le déclic de cet album confession et des chansons poignantes comme Tiny Love ?

Mika. - J’ai retrouvé ma passion profonde pour la musique. Un jour, Fanny Ardant m’a dit une chose que je n’oublierai jamais : «Vous pensez que c’est possible de mourir pour l’amour ?» J’ai répondu que je ne savais pas. Elle m’a alors dit : «Donc, vous devez grandir ! L’amour, c’est la seule chose pour laquelle vous allez mourir.» C’est aussi le point de départ de cet album. J’avais oublié que l’on crée, que l’on chante devant un public par amour… Ce «tiny love» que je chante.

 

Votre éventail musical est infini et vos textes sonnent comme des poèmes…

Les paroles sont nées d’histoires que j’ai écrites, de la poésie «hors la loi» de Susan Sontag, où tous les vers sont en tension. Musicalement, je cherchais plus l’expressivité que la perfection : l’étrange fascination qui se dégage quand on écoute David Bowie, George Michael … Quelque chose d’imparfait, d’indéfinissable.

 

Votre musique est plus visuelle que jamais. Quels artistes vous inspirent ?

Je vois la musique en images, en couleurs. En faisant cet album, je pensais aux effets mirage d’Olafur Eliasson, d’Anish Kapoor, aux tableaux de Barnett Newman. Des artistes qui ont un sens de l’immensité dans laquelle bâtir des parcours. J’étais moi-même devant des paysages à perte de vue : j’ai conçu des chansons dans une maison en Toscane, près de Florence, où j’ai bricolé un home studio. J’ai tout composé et enregistré en direct avec des instruments vintage, pour ne pas perdre l’esprit de l’instant.

 

On est ébloui par vos aigus, vos falsettos… Qu’est-ce qui habite votre voix aujourd’hui ?

J’ai toujours rêvé d’être un chanteur de R’n’B ou Michael Jackson, mais j’ai une voix blanche. J’ai été formé dans des chœurs classiques, avec Strauss, Mozart… J’ai fini par comprendre que je pouvais libérer ma voix, la moduler comme un instrument. Ça a été un exercice extrêmement intime. Je me suis senti fragile et très puissant en même temps.

INVITÉ RTL - Le chanteur Mika revient sur les devants de la scène avec un nouvel album introspectif, "My Name Is Michael Holbrook".

 

Mon nom est Michael Holbrook. Cette inscription sur la pochette est une promesse. Celle de se raconter comme jamais. Ce cinquième enregistrement - intégralement en anglais - est une autobiographie en treize morceaux.

 

Douze ans après son premier album, Michael Holbrook Jr. de son vrai nom, renoue avec une forme d'innocence. Les arrangements sont toujours pop-électros, mais quelques titres sont plus organiques avec du piano et des cordes. Tout en faisant des clins d’œils à George Michael, Prince et Queen, l'album est kaléidoscope intime qui évoque l'importance de vivre le moment présent, la famille, la peur d'aimer.

Baptiser son album de la sorte, c'est une manière d'avouer que Mika, son alias, lui a un peu échappé ces dernières années "c'est un nom que je détestais et je voulais savoir pourquoi", se confie-t-il.  

Cette nouvelle collection de chansons est née à la suite d'un voyage qui a mené l'artiste en Georgie, aux États-Unis, sur les traces de sa famille paternelle. Un véritable "retour aux sources" qui nourrira son album. "Je suis allée au cimetière de Bonaventure et j'ai vu un endroit où il y avait tous les Penniman (la famille de son père) et là y avait mon nom", raconte-t-il. Une tombe d'un inconnu avec une inscription bien trop familière ; une rencontre bouleversante pour Mika,"c'est comme si je rentrais dans ma maison et que je découvrais une pièce après 10 ans".

L'artiste anglo-libanais, star de l'émission The Voice, a été entraîné depuis tout petit par sa mère, Joannie, qui lui répétait: "Soit tu auras du succès et tu seras heureux, soit tu seras en prison". Une chanson laisse entendre sa voix dans une version alternative de Tiny Love qui clôt le disque. L'artiste se confie sur la maladie de sa mère, sur sa mélancolie et sa tristesse. "Je me met au piano et je transforme ces soucis en mélodie", raconte-t-il.

Contrairement à ces anciens albums, où l'artiste était plus pudique dans ses textes, My Name Is Michael Holbrook est très intime, sa pudeur s'étiole avec le temps. Il ne présente plus aucun personnage, aucun déguisement. "Avant je me cachais derrière des personnage, nous confie-t-il, je m'en suis rendu compte après que je dessinais ces personnages pour me raconter".
