C'est La Vie - Song and Lyrics Discussion

What an extraordinary tribute to someone who sounds like she was an extraordinary person. It so captures what she taught to him….and now to all of us.

Edited to add: what I see is totally about his mom and the philosophical and emotional result of her loss. From his looking at the meaning of the aging process and his questioning, to her struggles and losses (Beirut) to the things she taught him and created for him and saw about his future, to the pain and emptiness his siblings share, to questioning everything because when you are grieving your own fading or the loss of a beloved what’s the point, to: but in the light of all of this, my mother said we must still live, and celebrate life, with an exclamation point! And so that is what he is doing. Thus it is a tribute to her life, their loss, and the message she left…. Her legacy. The video enhances that message, tho there is irony in the fact that the dancing crowd does not understand the lyrics or the song (yet?) and is just there for a Mika party….and he is doing the best he can, as she inspired him to do. Yet, as someone pointed out, alone in the crowd. Those who “know” him can see what is behind his eyes. I don’t think the fans who are there are able or willing to in that moment. Or he doesn’t want to let them.

I love the melody. I am captivated and deeply moved by the brilliant lyrics. And the entire gestalt of the video—lyrics in contrast to melody (as usual!), upbeat dance (dance! Dance! Dance!) beat, venue, party atmosphere, and, above it all (literally and figuratively), Mika, smiling and entertaining his fans, rips my guts out. This may well be not what the song wants me to do, but my own feelings of compassion and affection for him make me cry. Which he does to me a lot, but this was different. I cried for him.

Regarding the importance of Mika's mom in her son's life, I wanted to give you this link in case you haven't seen the video of his second Eurovision press conference :

At 6.20 Mika and the other presenters are asked how they reacted to being asked to present Eurovision. Mika answers at 8.00 and mentions his mom twice. ❤

Thank you so much for this. I have no idea how he kept his composure! Also this reminded me how he never uses an interview to grandstand, or take the opportunity to be showy…from what I have seen, he always answers questions with total sincerity, and works as hard to do his job in interviews as he does in performances.    .

After reading the Vanity Fair interview I realized the limits of my interpretation of this song: I am an American. After all, Mika chose to write this dong (no! It's not a dong! It's a song! OMG What a horrid typo!) in French, using one of the phrases that the French culture is most known for around the world. The phrase! So what I missed—correct me if I am wrong— is that of course the basic meaning of the song is: ok, yes, there are all these bad aspects to existence, all these complications, but— that's life! Accept it! Celebrate it! It comes with life, and that makes it all glorious, as difficult as some of it might be.

Embarrassing but funny obscene typo.

I know this is a typo but it did make me chuckle! :naughty:

After all Mika did write Lollipop and Ice Cream, and also Sweet Banana for the new album. We all know none of these songs are actually about food! :teehee:

It was next to “Jimmy” :biggrin2:

Jimmy isn't in my (online) dictionary, I only know thanks to you what that means... :mf_rosetinted: :lmfao:

Let's see if Mika will grace us with more synonyms on his album... looks like I still have some things to learn. 🙈 :teehee:

ok, now how do we get back on topic? I read that Mika had the lyrics for C'est la vie printed on a paper for Chalons, but he said it was too small to read. :teehee: but he got them right I think?

I was thinking today, while Mika said in one of the interviews that without the chorus it would be the most depressing / heartbreaking song... actually to me the most powerful message isn't "C'est la vie", but "life, look at me, I won't be afraid of you anymore!", which isn't in the chorus but in the bridge. I think this best sums up the positive side of the song. "C'est la vie" can be interpreted in a positive way, it's all part of life, the good and the bad sides - but I always saw this expression more like a resignation, "that's how it is, just accept it" - and this isn't a very positive message imo. :dunno: While the conclusion to not be afraid of life anymore has a clearly positive message to me.

Yes, yes, yes! Positive in general, and as a touching, to those of us who care about him but who are not in his life…as a statement that Mika is making about himself. I mean, after that horrid childhood, the discomfort of being harassed about his sexuality, and his own internalized, personal journey with being gay…and the personal struggles he has spoken of (how his fans saved him, his shyness, etc) …and those he hadn't spoken of….it is a victory!

You made me look it up as well, best typo ever :floor:  I can add it to the list of totally useless words I learned here. (And with useless I'm not referring to the meaning of these words, just that I won't be able to use them at work):lmfao:

Oh, wait! Wasn't there another famous gay singer who wrote….

I write the dongs that make the whole world sing
I write the dongs of love and special things
I write the dongs that make the young girls cry
I write the dongs, I write the dongs….

Ok, ok, sorry, it popped into my head and I couldn't resist…:angelnot::lmfao::teehee:

Elle me dit danse !

Parce que c’est ça la vie

What is beauty ?

What is ugly?

What is fake?

What is real?

What does it all have to do with it

What is it?

What’s death?

The lives before

What’s rain?

What about nice weather?

What’s coming straight ahead?

What are all these wrinkles

On my face?

Why do they come

And betray my age

Even if getting old is like a sinking

What is it?

What are all these flowers and
her love?

My brothers and sisters and their
heavy hearts

A closet locked so tightly

Because that’s what life is about

Because that’s what it is

Because that’s what life is about

Because that’s what it is

Because that’s what life is about

Because that’s what it is

Because that’s what life is about

That’s life

All her colours and scents

Her Damascus roses and her jasmine

Like her Lebanon fading away

We thought she was dreaming too big

That she drew like a child

In the end, she was the one
thinking ahead

If that’s what life is about

If that’s what love is about

May your head bloom

And keep on blooming

If that’s what life is about

If that’s what death is about

May your head bloom

And keep on blooming

Because that’s what life is about

Because that’s what it is

Because that’s what life is about

Because that’s what it is

Because that’s what life is about

Because that’s what it is

Because that’s what life is about

That’s life

So life, take a look at me!

Because I won’t be afraid of
you anymore

With flowers even silently

She tells me

So life, take a look at me!

Because I won’t be afraid of
you anymore

With flowers even silently

She tells me

She tells me to dance!

Because that’s what life is about

Because that’s what it is

Because that’s what life is about

Because that’s what it is

Because that’s what life is about

Because that’s what it is

Because that’s what life is about

That’s life

That’s life

cuori affranti

Armadio chiuso a doppia mandata

Perché così è la vita

Perché è così

Perché così è la vita

Perché è così

Perché così è la vita

Perché è così

Perché così è la vita

È la vita

Tutti i suoi colori e profumi

in grande

Che disegnasse come una bambina

Eppure era lei che vedeva lontano

Se è questa la vita

Se è questo l'amore

Che la tua testa fiorisca

Fiorisca sempre

Se è questa la vita

Se è questa la morte

Che la tua testa fiorisca

Fiorisca ancora

Perché così è la vita

Perché è così

Perché così è la vita

Perché è così

Perché così è la vita

Perché è così

Perché così è la vita

È la vita

Allora vita guardami!

Perché non avrò più paura di te

Con dei fiori pur in silenzio

Me lo dice

Allora vita guardami!

Perché non avrò più paura di te

Con dei fiori pur in silenzio

Me lo dice

Mi dice di ballare!

Perché così è la vita

Perché è così

Perché così è la vita

Perché è così

Perché così è la vita

Perché è così

Perché così è la vita

È la vita

È la vita

¿Qué es bello?

¿Qué es feo?

¿Qué es falso?

¿Qué es verdad?

Qué tiene que ver todo esto

¿Qué es?

¿Qué está muerto?

Las vidas que había antes

¿Qué es la lluvia?

¿Qué hay del buen tiempo?

¿Qué hay por delante?

¿Qué son todas estas arrugas

¿En mi cara?

Por qué aparecen

Y delatan mi edad

Aunque hacerse mayor es un naufragio

¿Qué es?

¿Qué son todas estas flores y
su amor?

Mis hermanos y hermanas y sus
corazones afligidos

Un armario cerrado fuertemente

Porque de eso trata la vida

Porque eso es lo que es

Porque de eso trata la vida

Porque eso es lo que es

Porque de eso trata la vida

Porque eso es lo que es

Porque de eso trata la vida

Así es la vida

Todos sus colores y sus perfumes

Sus rosas de Damasco y su jazmín

Es como su Líbano que se desvanece

Pensábamos que estaba soñando
demasiado

Siempre florezca

Si en eso consiste la vida

Si en eso consiste la muerte

Que tu cabeza florezca

Siga floreciendo

Porque de eso trata la vida

Porque eso es lo que es

Porque de eso trata la vida

Porque eso es lo que es

Porque de eso trata la vida

Porque eso es lo que es

Porque de eso trata la vida

Así es la vida

Asi que vida, ¡mírame!

Porque ya no te tendré miedo
nunca más

Con flores, aunque sea en silencio

Ella me dice

Asi que vida, ¡mírame!

Porque ya no te tendré miedo
nunca más

Con flores, aunque sea en silencio

Ella me dice

¡Ella me dice que baile!

Porque de eso trata la vida

Porque eso es lo que es

Porque de eso trata la vida

Porque eso es lo que es

Porque de eso trata la vida

Porque eso es lo que es

Porque de eso trata la vida

Así es la vida

Czym jest piękno?

Czym jest brzydota?

Co jest fałszywe?

Co jest prawdziwe?

Co to wszystko ma wspólnego

Co to jest?

Czym jest śmierć?

Życie przed

Czym jest deszcz?

A co z ładną pogodą?

Co nas czeka?

Co to za zmarszczki

Na mojej twarzy?

Dlaczego przychodzą

I zdradzają mój wiek

Nawet jeśli starość jest jak tonięcie

Co to jest?

Czym są te wszystkie kwiaty i jej
miłość?

Moi bracia i siostry i ich ciężkie
serca

Szafa zamknięta tak szczelnie

Bo na tym polega życie

Bo to właśnie to

Bo na tym polega życie

Bo to właśnie to

Bo na tym polega życie

Bo to właśnie to

Bo na tym polega życie

To jest życie

Wszystkie jej kolory i zapachy

Jej róże damasceńskie i jaśmin

Niczym jej oddalający się Liban

Myśleliśmy, że ma zbyt wielkie
marzenia

Że rysowała jak dziecko

Koniec końców, to ona myślała o
przyszłości

Jeśli o to chodzi w życiu

Jeśli o to chodzi w miłości

Niech twoja głowa rozkwitnie

I kwitnie dalej

Jeśli o to chodzi w życiu

Niech twoja głowa rozkwitnie

I kwitnie dalej

Bo na tym polega życie

Ona każe mi

Oh wow that just hit me. Because I am definitely a pretty chill and "well that‘s life, just move on“ type of person which can be a big strength. But I have recently realized (and been told) that maybe it would be better if I allowed myself to accept and express my emotions from time to time 🙃

I think maintaining a good balance there is really important and to see the last part (Life is hard sometimes and we should acknowledge that but we also shouln’t be afraid of it) as the conclusion is a great interpretation.
