Beauty School Dropout - yes that's the one, thanks for doing the thinking for me :)

Guess he figured we're used to waiting, when we're not in the dole queue then we're in the Mika queue :mf_rosetinted:

queue = :shivers:

I don't have much to contribute to the conversation, but I do like the line about him being a mediocre writer :teehee:

Me too. tis great :-)

I'm fairly sure it's about me actually :fangurl: If you remember the first project we made, I told him a bit about myself and asked him to write a song about me - can't believe it took him this long though :sneaky2:

it could be about quite a few of us .... if he`s taking the mick ..... its either about u or me :teehee:

Love the whole verse :wub2:

I'm a mediocre writer

who sings all of the time

writing songs about misfortunes and other people's crimes

well they say that I am doing my duty to the world

Oh you could say that that is onerous,

I'm just craving to be heard

I love the simplicity--just the piano and that AMAZING voice. :wub2:
Me too! I can't stop listening to it :hypo:. Mika is a pure genius :wub2:.
I was finally able to hear it!! Listening to it now infact...:mf_lustslow:

I love the parts where the piano gets more intense...Good stuff.

The way he sings "misfortunes" kills me :swoon:
and the way he sings every single word....... :fangurl::fangurl:

not easy to sing along..... you need a lot of breath!

That last verse is just craziness. That starts with "Well who is there to listen..."

That intensity is just...wow. :wub2:

The secret is to listen to it at ridiculously loud volumes. :naughty:

Yes, we agree.

Have listened to this at Lady Jane a ton today. They're just so brilliant.:wub2::wub2:

When he sings the line

*ooo don't leave me alone*

it reminds me of a song from the movie Dirty Dancing

that's the bit that I like the less, that line I mean.. it sounds fake to me.. unless we mean it in the we both share this destiny thing.. :naughty:

Yes, those two verses are what makes me love the song :wub2:, I just love the way his pace picks up, and how the passion seems to posess him...

I haven't read this thread, so have no clue if it's just me... but there was always something about this song that seemed strangley familiarl, especially when it comes to the 'who would want to cuddle up...(or similar)' part. I just couldn't nail it down - until now. This is so Harry Nilsson.

Well, to me.. :roftl:

Lyrics from MS:

LONELY ALCOHOLIC

You’re a lonely alcoholic

with a tendency to whine

well you speak it

and you drink it

and bore us all the time

say you drink out of your sorrow

for you’ve got no one to love

but tell me,

who could cuddle up

to a lonely alcoholic?

You’re a stressed out single mother

who has clearly been harassed

well you can’t predict the future

for you can’t erase the past

cuz your baby is growing

anywhere but up

so join the line and get the dole

for the stressed out single mothers

I’m a mediocre writer

who sings all of the time

writing songs about misfortunes

and other peoples crimes

oh they say that I am doing

my duty to the world

or you could say that that is onerous

I’m just craving to be heard

Please tell me who will listen

to the problems of our lives

there are kids who just don’t eat enough

and men with many wives

if we’re all together screaming

why can’t we make a sound

oh cuz the dirt on which we’re stepping

is the one in which

we will be found

Doesn't he sing !"Isn't going"???

Doesn't he sing !"Isn't going"???

yeah, and "well who is there to listen" instead of "please tell me who will listen"

Didn't he say in a vlog, they kept on changing the lyrics till the last recording day?

That could be the reason why they're a little different from the official ones, which weren't probably corrected anymore.

Still can't get into this song much.

At first I thought the lyrics were patronising; on repeated listening I now hear a note of irony in his voice/words. I think. :dunno:

However, two things still really grate. Firstly, the 'men with many wives' thing.. Secondly, the 'oooooooh baby, don't leave me alooooooone' is just too cheesy for words.

I've now accepted that this, for me, is the dud of the EP and I'm not beating myself up about not liking it :naughty:

  • 2 weeks later...

I like the tune and his voice, I like how he sings it and what he sings about, I love the whine/wine reference, I love the irony in it, I don't find it patronizing cos I get irony from it.

I like the mediocre writer part too and craving to be heard (reminds me of a poem I wrote, http://www.mikafanclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5969&highlight=sparkly+poetry&page=5 not the whole thing lol I WISH... no just the mediocre writer craving to be heard bit).

But my very fave part is "the sh*t oops I mean DIRT on which we're stepping, is the one in which we will be found.

sorry guys, I'm a bit late joining here... But I looove this song - by far my favourite. And as an aside, I really don't like Lady Jane... but this one :wub2:

I've been racking my brain trying to figure out what the melody of this song reminds me of...:aah:

And then it suddenly dawned on me! The tune actually really reminds me of this song LOL!:

:naughty:

wow, you're exactly right!! lol.

For some reason, this song brings up a bizarre little scenario. I can just imagine a load of people in one crowded room, everyone drunk, singing this song........just seems like one of those songs that unites people together at the end of a very random night lol....like "always look on the bright side of life" or "F*** her gently" from Tenacious D lol xD

I see what you mean, and I think it's the key change at:

"Well who is there to listen to the problems of our lives..."

A strong key change always makes people join in :naughty:

You are absolutely right... The chords and even the beginning of the melody are similar.. but it can still be accidental

.. it sounds like a typical song a bunch of drunken guys would sing in a pub in England.... If he deliverately wrote it like that, he is clever... but if he was simply following his instincts then he is a genius.:wub2: (:naughty:)
