Guys, is it only me or does Claudia Winkleman's way to say "pianist" sounds like she is saying a word I don't think is allowed here but everything she says following it makes me burst into laughter :lmao:

To my ears she really says another word :stifle: so when she says for example "the best pianist will perform in the Royal Opera House" I'm :lmfao: :lmfao: :lmfao:

It's just you.:naughty: We're just enjoying the show, the music, the talents, and seeing Mika on screen again.

No idea why you have such a filthy mind. Missing the NC? :teehee:

I didn't do it on purpose I swear. She has a strange accent...my ears are used to American accent but not to British one... have you ever seen this video? Mika heard the same thing in Italy

It looks good, but it tells me the first 500mb are free, then it's paid. No idea how much streaming 500mb is.

Yes, I got the same message, on TunnelBear only the first 500 MB are free.

Use hola. It is totally free

I gave up using Hola long time ago, it turned out they have some serious security problems and have been removed as extension from Chrome, so be careful : https://www.top10vpn.com/reviews/hola-free-vpn/

Oh! Once I'd logged in to TunnelBear, it said the free trial had been upgraded to 2000MB. Handy. :biggrin2:

Claudia hits the right notes

THE PIANO WEDNESDAY, CHANNEL 4

Hhhh

Fancy a fresh and compelling musical competition, full of emotional peaks and troughs? Then watch The Piano – a format that’s the antithesis of all the big-budget silliness of The Masked Singer or That’s My Jam.

There are no castles or costumes either (as per host Claudia Winkleman’s recent hit The Traitors) to distract from the pleasingly unfussy premise: talented amateurs turning up to play one of the pianos currently situated in train stations around the country. Kicking off in London’s St Pancras, we met an array of very gifted musicians in a variety of musical genres. That was thrilling in itself, but the participants had no idea that behind the scenes pop star Mika and virtuoso pianist Lang Lang were assessing their performances. Who would win a slot on the bill at the upcoming concert finale at the Royal Festival Hall?

Initially thrown by the oddcouple judges, I had no quibble with Lang Lang – what a coup! – but couldn’t, at first, see the point of Mika. How wrong I was.

It turns out the Grace Kelly hitmaker not only studied at the Royal College of Music but has judged the Italian X Factor and the French version of The Voice, so while Lang Lang is the musical genius, Mika brings a performative playfulness to the proceedings. Meanwhile, Claudia is all warmth and kindness with the pianists who are, of course, the fortissimo stars of this heartwarming show.

The Piano

There’s some real magic at play in this talent search, from the way it celebrates gifted street musicians to the wonderful chemistry between judges Mika and Lang Lang. Last week’s winner was a real eyeopener, and the range of styles and stories circling tonight’s new batch of contestants is just as broad, moving and exciting. This time, the piano is located at Leeds railway

station, where there isn’t much room for Lang Lang and Mika’s hideout. Let’s just say, it isn’t where you would expect to find a renowned concert pianist and a BRIT Award-winning pop star. The music ranges from 1990s pop to Chopin – don’t miss 71-year-old Liam and his hand-built piano hut on wheels. And you’ll be as moved and stunned as Mika, Lang Lang and the passers-by in Leeds when you hear 13-year-old Lucy play.

I appreciate the comments about Mika but I'm wondering when an article will also point out how extraordinary he is, considering that he is able to  carry out his role as a judge, fluently, in three languages and adapt his remarks to the culture he finds himself in.

TELEVISUAL

01.02.23

Love Productions seeks piano superstars

Love Productions is to make a new five-part series for Channel 4 that will seek out talented amateur pianists.

Hosted by Claudia Winkleman, each week, talented pianists will be invited to play on public pianos in London St Pancras, Leeds, Glasgow and Birmingham train stations, sharing their stories and music with the great British public.

From nonagenarians who have been playing for eighty years to twelve-year-olds who have never played in pubic before, those who taught themselves to play the classics in lockdown to players who feel the music, composing pieces about their life experiences and someone with no sight who against all the odds has mastered Chopin, commuters in train stations across the country will be stopped in their tracks as heartfelt, emotional and uplifting performances take place.

The performers will be secretly watched by Lang Lang, who is widely regarded as the greatest classical pianist of the modern era, and platinum selling pop star Mika. One performer will be given an invitation to perform on one of the world’s most prestigious stages.

The final will bring together four amazing pianists – one from each train station – at The Royal Festival Hall, where they will showcase their talent in solo performances in front of an audience of thousands.

The Piano was commissioned for Channel 4 by Shaminder Nahal, Head of Specialist Factual and Madonna Benjamin, Senior Commissioning Editor for Documentaries. The five-part series will be made by Love Productions with executive producers Richard McKerrow and Luke Byrne and series editor Ted Hill.

Shaminder Nahal said: “It’s so thrilling to be celebrating such an array of incredibly talented pianists – many of them self-taught – in such an emotional and uplifting series. Claudia Winkelman, the fantastic judges Mika and Lang Lang, and the brilliant team from Love, take us on a journey through London, Glasgow, Birmingham, Leeds – and finally the Royal Festival Hall, creating a joyful and moving portrait of Britain, full of humanity, surprises, and the transformative power of piano-playing.”

Richard McKerrow said: “The making of this brand-new series, The Piano has been a creatively exhilarating and uplifting experience. We’ve been able to work with such a broad and diverse range of pianists bravely expressing themselves in such a passionate heartfelt way on public pianos in railway stations across the country. Looked after so generously by Claudia Winkleman and observed by the extraordinary Mika and Lang Lang, this remarkable trio bring a magical, soulful quality to this television series which we hope feels rare and unusual.”

Haha your wish was granted! :D

I'm positively surprised by the reviews to be honest.

I was expecting them to be very harsh towards Mika.

I‘m gonna play devil's adovcat here but if you see it from the perspective of an audience who haven't seen or heard anything about him since 2007-2010, he is not an obvious choice as a judge for a piano competition. As one article put it the judges are one of the world's best pianists and a "pop star who can play the piano". Of course we know that he is much than that but from the outside that seems like a fair assessment.

But the important thing is that all the reviews come round to him in the end. They're saying that even if he wasn't an obvious choice, he is doing a fantastic job by appearing charming, empathetic and musically competent.

I had hoped that this was gonna be the case (at least after his performance in the finale) but after just one episode that‘s fantastic!

It is great that Mika has had the opportunity to be a judge on "The Piano" because it's a context where he can be himself. He's fun to watch when he's relaxed. Hope UK audiences will eventually check out other work he's done  and his forthcoming album.

........

I also love the fact that newspapers belonging to different sides of the political spectrum are enthusiastic about the show and speak well of Mika.

"pop star who can play the piano".

That was infuriating, a little research would have shown how much more there is to him.   Unfortunately, there's a deep cynicism in British tabloids, they love to make snide remarks, and pounce on anything they can turn into a negative. And tv critics are generally lazy.

Honestly, it scares me when he does things that will feature in the British press, because I know how bad they can be. So it is good to see the comments coming around to him with "how wrong I was" and acknowledging him as "extraordinary".

This has just reminded me of something else that could be a little naughty!

In the first episode Claudia describes Mika and Lang Lang as "secret squirrels", Lang Lang then replied by saying "yes, give us some nuts!"

Oh Lang Lang, you had to say that in front of Mika?!
