What does Comté taste like? It's stocked in my local supermarket, wondering whether to try it.

I've tried it, didn't think it was anything exceptional.  It's a hard cheese, slightly sweet and nutty.  Give it a try though.

Brie verdict:

I like it! :biggrin2:

Maybe I should have checked this thread earlier though because @silver I did eat it straight from the fridge 😅, it was still fairly soft though but not runny.

I was expecting it to have a strong smell but it doesn't really smell of anything to me. I found the rind and the cheese itself have different flavours. Rind: stronger taste, a little salty??? Cheese: creamy, almost buttery, a little strong for my taste but I like that! There is a sweetness to it too.

Seeing as it's made from full fat milk I don't think I could eat too much of it in one go, what I had (on crackers!) was just enough :licks_lips:

Question: can I melt it onto something or does that affect the taste?

OK, I don't know how I didn't see this thread before, given the subject matter.

But anyhow, @TinyLove_CJ Not only can you eat brie melted, but you SHOULD! Heat it in the oven or even in the microwave and than have it on crackers, Triscuits, something crunchy and it will change your life! Eating it cold or even lukewarm does it no good at all. Brie is best when it's melty.

We need a new tag - "stinky époisses". :lol3:

Or maybe "old socks". :naughty:

Comte is awesome.

You already know how I feel about epoisses. :puking:

But if people try it here, I'm willing to try it again.

Also, if you ever doubt my love of cheese, just check out some of my past Instagram posts. Trust me, I'm not lying. Cheese is LIFE!

I might try it again and melt it next time! Eating it cold wasn't that great actually...

And now please tell me, what is a Triscuit? 🤔

But it can be really good lukewarm as well! As long as it’s melty, I agree. Depends on the Brie I guess?

I was thinking the same thing! :biggrin2:

I actually think they could be!

Text taken from Wikipedia:

"Triscuit is a brand name of snack crackers which take the form of square baked whole wheat wafers. Invented in 1900, a patent was granted in 1902[1] and the Shredded Wheat Company began production the next year[2] in Niagara Falls, New York."

I'm surprised, thought you had Triscuits in the UK?

Well, yes, they are pretty much a thin, shredded wheat sort of cracker. Savory, as you say. A bit salty. I love them.

It is kind of like swiss cheese but tastier , more dense and less sweet and without holes in it. It doesn't smell. It is great by itself or in a gratin. You can cook meat with a few tomatoes a little bit of mustard and a slice of comtè on top (usually pork chops) it is very good :licks_lips:

I think we can only get it online, or through specialist suppliers.

So I did it

I found l'Epoisses cheese in a Polish Auchan supermarket.

And I tasted it with some fresh bread.

It's delicious!

At the first bite it seems pretty spicy.

But then there is this creamy butter taste which stays in your mouth till the end.

Much more interesting than "a flat" Camembert's taste.

Well, it's much more expensive but it will be nice to buy it from time to time.

And my fingers smell now a bit like socks but I don't care :lol3:

I'll try to remember to bring some next time I'm in the UK for a Mika gig!

Ugh. You're going to make me retry it, aren't you? OK, next time I see it in the shops, I'll get some. My husband's never had it, anyhow, so I guess he needs to taste it, too.

But don't forget to remove it from the fridge (a piece of it)  about 30 minutes before eating.

It should have an ambient temperature to taste the whole savour.

This reminds me what happened a few years ago when I returned from a holiday in France with a bag full of Epoisses and at the Hungarian border the custom workers asked us to open the trunk for checking the luggage. The moment they felt the smell, they changed their mind instantly and let us go :lmfao:

  • 2 weeks later...

I tried comté today... and I don't like it!

Which I'm quite surprised at because I do like other nutty cheeses but the comté I tried was a bit too creamy and a little bitter. Just not to my taste really.

Are you sure it was Comté?

Comté is not "creamy" in general and has a rather fruity taste. It’s a hard cheese that I really love. :wub2:

Actually I bought some Comté this week and it was better than I remembered.  Like Celine says, it's a very hard cheese, and certainly shouldn't be bitter.

That's what it said on the packet.

Maybe the Comté sold in UK supermarkets isn't as good?

I was wondering this. It didn't seem all that expensive for a "specially selected" cheese. I guess you really do get what you pay for!

Texture was similar to cheddar, but it was only after I looked at the packaging before putting the rest in the bin that I noticed it's made with unpasteurised milk! (Yuck!)

Maybe that has something to do with the taste 🤔

Could be, if there was a bitter strain of bacteria in the milk.

Do you eat parmesan? That is unpasteurized.

Some of the best cheeses in the world are made with unpasteurised milk:  Roquefort, Wensleydale, Epoisses, Pecorino, Parmesan, Manchego, Morbier, Appenzeller, Reblochon, Emmental,  not to mention all the artisan versions of Cheddar, Red Leicester, Double Gloucester etc.

Basically raw milk makes better flavoured cheese.  An aged cheese (older than 60 days) is unlikely to have any harmful bacteria, if that is what worries you.
