The only camp artist in the pop chart In the week that Mika's Grace Kelly makes it to No 1, why aren't there more flamboyant pop stars like him around? Caroline Sullivan January 26, 2007 09:56 AM You've probably noticed that this week's number one single is Grace Kelly by Mika, the Anglo-Lebanese pop singer who's been hotly tipped, as they say, by nearly everyone. If you don't know the song, listen to it here before reading any further. Having done so, you'll probably agree that, despite the already soaraway success, Mika will never be to everyone's taste. Singing in falsetto is a surefire way to infuriate potential audiences (see Justin Hawkins, Leo Sayer)…

THE SUN Bizarre 'Always been a camp show-off' By GORDON SMART Deputy Showbiz Editor January 23, 2007 MIKA is Britain’s biggest new chart star, yet he cannot read music, has crippling dyslexia and was relentlessly bullied at school. But he has overcome all the odds and is set for huge success. The 23-year-old pop sensation from London has landed an unprecedented No1 with debut single Grace Kelly  from music downloads ALONE. The recent change in chart rules paved the way for his huge online following to propel him to the top of the charts without selling even a single copy in record stores. There hasn’t been a buzz about an arti…

The Sun Online January 22, 2007 NEW star MIKA is shaping up to be the biggest music sensation since the ARCTIC MONKEYS burst on to the scene last year. Last night his debut single Grace Kelly went straight in at No1 on downloads alone. The CD is not even released until a week today. And I can exclusively announce that Mika has already landed a massive deal with fashion guru PAUL SMITH. He is earning a six-figure sum to front Smith’s global spring/summer 2007 advertising campaign - the first shot is on the right. The 23-year-old’s angular face will be on billboards and in magazines all over the world from February 1. He is clearl…

Our beloved Mika was recently a guest on BBC radio. And, in addition to giving a fantastic interview - where (among other things) we learned that he is dyslexic and that his diplomat father was once held hostage for several months in Beirut - he performed a few choice songs. In addition to Mika's original material, he also decided to do a cover of Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" ! You can just hear Mika having so much fun as he reinterprets the song. It's infectious! You'll be missing out if you don't check it out ! I've posted a clip on youtube, you may hear this great (and fun) cover by mika here: [yt]RjUN7oD8N1k[/yt]

I have just found that in "The Knowledge" (the TV guide magazine that comes with The Times on Saturday) "The week's best music video" is Grace Kelly. Now, I'm not sure that I should post this because some of it isn't very complimentary, but we all love Mika enough to take it, so here goes: Spread throughout a selection of stills from the video is the following text: Quote: First, well done Mika for being a gay pop star who has got to No 1 without any protracted ambiguity a la Freddie or George. Not so well done for coming up with a video that screams "We're mad, we are! This amount of FUN should be illegal!" Loads of wacky people (cute kids, cute models, no…

Comeback group Take That are reportedly lining up pop's hot new talent Mika to support them on their forthcoming European tour. Gary, Howard, Jason and Mark are apparently planning a string of shows that will match last year's sold out UK tour - and they think the Beirut-born singer would be the perfect support slot. The 23-year-old's debut outing, Grace Kelly, bounced to the top of the charts on Sunday on the strength of downloads alone and is poised to stay at No 1 next week after the CD hits shops on Monday. DOTMUSIC (LAUNCH.COM) Mika: Number One? Mika is set to claim the UK's Number One single this weekend with his debut release "Grace Kelly". Midweek sales figures suggest "X-Factor" winner Leona Lewis will be displaced from the chart top spot on Sunday by the flamboyant, hotly-tipped pop newcomer. "Grace Kelly", which charted at number three on downloads alone last weekend, is expected to overhaul Lewis, with Just Jack's "Starz In Their Eyez" close behind. Elsewhere in the Top Ten, The View, Klaxons, Jamie T and Damon Albarn's new project The Good, The Bad And The Queen are also expected to chart with new entries. Mika releases his debut album, "Life I…

I was at my friends' house last night and was preaching evangelically about Mika. Her brow wrinkled as the name triggered something in her memory. She pulled glamour magazine from the rack by her chair and amongst the adverts for shoes and lipsticks and the odd celeb gossip was a very small and brief article which says no more than we already know- his origins, when the single is out etc and a very nice pic of him lounging louchely on a couch or bed. If anyone has this to scan and show the others i'm sure the picture would be very much appreciated.

FREDDIE MIKA-RY CHART STAR GRABS QUEEN'S PIANO! Eva Simpson & Caroline Hedley HE'S been compared to Freddie Mercury - and now we can reveal that Mika has got his hands on the Queen frontman's treasured instrument. The Beirut-born singer, who's topped the charts with his infectious single Grace Kelly, is so obsessed with Freddie he had his prized piano shipped in for a recording session. Mika, 23, insisted on using it to lay down an acoustic version of Grace Kelly, which is being released exclusively on itunes.com next Monday. A source close to the camp singer tells us: "Mika was adamant that if he was going to do a stripped-down, acoustic version of his song he …

From billboard.com Mika European Youngster 'Relaxes' Pop Music Katie Hasty, N.Y. "In the U.K., they call this pop, but in America it's rock," Mika tells Billboard.com. "I consider myself a singer-songwriter -- although there's a bad stigma about the term." The 23-year-old Londoner can add dance artist to that mix, as his track "Relax, Take It Easy" earns him his first chart ink at No. 44 on the Hot Dance Club Play tally. The songwriter's background is indicative of his diverse palate, marked by numerous years in a variety of prestigious music schools. During his early teens, after moving to London from Paris, Mika dropped out of school due to difficu…

THE TIMES TIMES 2 The Face BY Damian Whitworth Mika: Downloads lead to singular success Smarting from yet another record company rejection, a young aspiring singersongwriter sat down at his piano and composed a jaunty slice of pop with an angry “screw you†message for the executives who wanted him to be something he was not. Now that song, Grace Kelly, sits atop the singles chart, and its creator, Mika, is being lauded as the effervescent sound of 2007. A week before its release in hard format, the song is only the second single to reach No 1 through downloads, and the flamboyant 23-year-old finds himself compared to Elton John, David Bowie, F…

ENFIELD INDEPENDENT Mika: Life In Cartoon Motion By Staff Reporter 23 January 2007 The power of the Polyphonic Spree, the wistfulness of Jim Noir and the je ne sais quoi of Queen meet up in the musical orbit of this flighty ten track wonder. My Interpretation stands toe to toe with The Magic Numbers and The Mamas & The Papas, sending you flying with its deep seated vocal projection and a glorious, ranging melody. The centrepiece of the album, Any Other World, is pure theatrics in Michael Crawford-sized portions, veering just the right side of sentimentality. A fresh and bold sound ready to push the boundaries of pop music. CW.

NEW YORK, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Mika's first single 'Grace Kelly' has topped the UK music charts on digital sales alone, despite the fact that the physical single won't be available in stores until January 29th. 'Grace Kelly' ascended to the coveted #1 spot after unseating Leona Lewis who had held the position for four weeks. With this honor Mika joins Gnarls Barkley as the only artists to reach the #1 position before their singles were released in stores. In addition, 'Grace Kelly' has now secured the top spot as the most played video on MTV. 'Historic', 'sensational' and 'without-any-doubt original' are just some of the adjectives being thrown around by critics in…
