He could still be a UK citizen but use his US passport  when he travels, but that seems unlikely to me. Thinking back to "Il Testimone," Mika only mentioned being American  when Pif asked about his nationality.

Yes he said it too when he released My name is Michael Holbrook.

Yes, I love the fact that he has fans everywhere and I admire the way he is able to adapt to and appreciate something about every culture he is in.

I don't usually like reality TV/talent shows, but I must admit I am enjoying watching this.  Love the way Mika explains things about non-classical music to Lang Lang, without coming over as a know-it-all.

The final stop for this brilliant talent search is Birmingham New Street station, where judges Mika and Lang Lang settle in to watch in secret as performers play the keys for a toe-tapping Jerry Lee Lewis tune and a surprising cover version of a Harry Styles hit.

Next week, you’ll see the finalists performing on stage at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

CRITICS’ CHOICE

The Piano (C4, 9pm)

Claudia Winkleman was last seen hamming it up in gothic knitwear as the twisted MC of The Traitors. Here, she hosts a gentler, kinder reality show, one that swaps backstabbing and banishments for creation and connection. Inspired by the trend for public pianos, the show features hand-picked amateur pianists — whether classical, pop, jazz or rock’n’roll — playing for passers-by. What they don’t know is that operatic pop singer Mika and classical titan Lang Lang are watching them on CCTV, selecting star performers to play a special show at the Royal Festival Hall. Inevitably, an emotive back story is as important as musical skill: there’s going to be a whole lot of weeping going on.

YOU SAY

The Piano (C4) hosted by Claudia Winkleman is a terrific idea and on show was a prodigious range of talents. So I am unsure why Lang Lang and Mika chose as the winner of the first programme the player who displayed the barest minimum of piano technique or singing prowess.

YOU SAY

The Piano (C4) is a captivating and moving programme. Ordinary people with extraordinary talent wanting to share their love of the music they can create on the piano. Unaware of it being a competition they just wanted to please those who stopped to listen. Lang Lang and Mika are excellent judges, with none of the pretension so often found in other talent shows. Claudia brings it all together with genuine love for the pianists.

Tom John

WHAT TO WATCH

THE PIANO Channel 4, 9pm

Social media is full of members of the public showing their chops on the many pianos installed in public places over the past few years.

This show attempts to harness their multifarious talents for a gig at London’s Royal Festival Hall – but fi rst they must unknowingly impress their judges.

Introduced, respectively, as “the world’s greatest pianist” and “one of the world’s greatest performers”, Lang Lang and Mika hide out in a hilariously sparsely furnished anteroom to spy on them as they perform for train station passers-by and host Claudia Winkleman.

To what extent should charisma be prioritised over technique?

What about self-composed pieces versus keyboard standards?

And above all, what are their stories?

A mechanic with a self-taught knack for propulsive boogiewoogie, a nonagenarian who met his wife (now a dementia suff erer) while playing jazz piano in a bar, and a construction site manager bold enough to improvise over Clair de Lune. Winkleman once again underlines her versatility after her moustache-twirling turn on pre-Christmas runaway hit The Traitors; overall, it’s full of inspiring examples of how music can off er relief and release aplenty.

More4 is a TV channel owned by the Channel 4 company, it should also be available on the All4 streaming service.

Channel 4 9PM

Following four weeks of searching for the country’s top ivory-tinkling talent, it’s the grand finale of the piano-playing competition tonight, and the series culminates in an incredible concert at The Royal Festival Hall on London’s South Bank.

Now, it’s up to world-renowned pianist Lang Lang, pop star Mika and charming host Claudia Winkleman to get the four remaining amateur pianists prepped for what is set to be the biggest performance of their lives.

For an hour and a quarter, we follow the finalists as they rehearse, then walk out onto the stage in front of a packed house. But before we find out who will win best performance, Mika and Lang Lang have one last surprise up their sleeves…
